Here are some tips for good foot and nail health:-

  1. Wash your feet daily in warm soapy water, ensuring the area between the toes is cleaned as well. Dry thoroughly, especially between the toes.
  2. Apply a good water-based moisturising cream all over the foot, except for between the toes. Ensure good coverage of the heel area as this is normally the thickest area of skin anywhere on the body.
  3. Remove hard skin gently with a  foot file.
  4. Trim your toe nails regularly, using proper nail clippers.
    Cut straight across and not too short, avoid cutting down at the corners as this can lead to ingrown nails.
  5. Avoid removing the cuticle as this is required for healthy nail growth.
  6. Wear footwear that supports the foot properly.
  7. Air trainers after each wear to avoid the build up of bacteria.
  8. Change hosiery daily, ensuring they are of natural fibres i.e. cotton/wool where possible.
  9. Consider lace-up or strap shoes over the instep as this will hold and secure the foot within the shoe.

Exercises for the foot and to aid circulation:-

  1. Draw the letter ‘O’ with your feet for a few minutes, then do the same in the opposite direction keeping your leg as still as possible (good for in-flight).
  2. Straighten your toes and wriggle.
  3. Raise, point and curl your toes, this is especially good for cramp in the toes.
  4. Circle all the letters of the alphabet with your foot (good for the office and in-flight)
  5. Placing a handkerchief or face cloth on the floor, try picking it up  using just your toes.
